Why switch from Windows to Linux? This is the question that more and more households and small businesses in Bulgaria are asking themselves, especially after the end of support for Windows 10 in October 2025. The answer is short: Linux today is free, secure, stable and compatible with almost everything you do on a daily basis - here are the seven most convincing reasons, supported by verified data.
Unlike Windows, which costs a license for each machine, Linux is distributed free and open source. You don't pay for the operating system, nor for most programs: LibreOffice completely replaces Microsoft Office for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, and GIMP, VLC, and Firefox cover graphics, video, and browsing. This way you also save on antivirus - the built-in protection is completely sufficient.
Windows is the primary target of malware. According to Surfshark data for 2025, Windows accounted for 87.4% of all desktop malware detections, and ransomware has historically primarily attacked Windows machines. Linux relies on a strict permissions system—users don't have administrative rights by default, and software comes from signed repositories. Additional protections such as AppArmor and SELinux limit damage even in the event of a breach. Most importantly: Linux desktop ransomware is rare, while Windows attacks are on the rise.
With open source, you and millions of developers see every line of the program - no hidden spyware or advertising. No forced updates, no telemetry, no intrusive suggestions. You decide when and what to update, and the system is updated centrally by a single package manager.
Windows 11 requires a modern processor and a TPM 2.0 chip, leaving millions of older machines without support. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS runs on a 2 GHz dual-core processor and 4 GB of RAM, and lighter editions like Xubuntu and Lubuntu also start with 1–2 GB of memory. Instead of throwing away the old laptop, you give it a second life with a fast and secure system - a service we often perform in ourcomputer service.
LTS versions get five years of support: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is securely updated until April 2029, and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS until 2031. The mid-run reboots and blue screens typical of Windows are absent. Distributions like openSUSE Leap use a Btrfs file system with snapshots - if an update breaks something, you roll back the system with a single command.
Gamers are no longer forced to stay on Windows. The Proton compatibility layer (built into Steam) runs thousands of Windows games on Linux, and in Steam's March 2026 survey, Linux reached a record 5.33% of users. According to ProtonDB, over 80% of the top 1000 games on Steam are rated "Gold" or higher, and Valve has already released Proton 11.0 (July 2026). Business software also runs through Wine, and for old programs there's always dual-boot as a fallback.
Linux is no longer "exotic" - this is a proven fact from the statistics for 2025-2026. The worldwide desktop share according to StatCounter data is about 3-4.7%, with the US passing the 5% mark in June 2025, and in North America Linux reaching 10.65% in July 2026. Even more impressive: Linux runs about 51% of the world's servers, all 500 fastest supercomputers and 90% of public cloud workloads.
| Indicator | Value | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop partition in the US | over 5% (5.03%) | June 2025 |
| Share on Steam | 5.33% (record) | March 2026 |
| Servers worldwide | about 51.3% | 2026 |
| Top 500 Supercomputers | 100% Linux | continuously since 2017 |
| Criterion | Windows | Linux |
|---|---|---|
| License price | Paid (eg for Windows 11 Home) | Free |
| Office suite | Microsoft 365 (subscription) | LibreOffice (Free) |
| Antivirus | Often paid | Embedded software manager, AppArmor/SELinux |
| Minimal hardware | 4 GB RAM, 64 GB disk, TPM 2.0 | 2–4 GB RAM, 25 GB disk |
| Updates | Forced, with restarts | Your choice, no interruptions |
| Telemetry | By default | There isn't |
Let's be honest: not everything is perfect. Some specific professional programs—for example, private accounting solutions or medical scanner software—only have a Windows version. For them, the solution is dual boot or a virtual machine, which we also offer as a service. For 95% of everyday tasks – browsing, email, documents, spreadsheets, video and even games – Linux is perfectly sufficient.
More details on versions and specific installation commands can be found in our detailedLinux installation guide for Ubuntu, Fedora and openSUSE.
