Choosing an operating system is more personal than it looks. Habits, software, budget, and plain brand loyalty all pile onto the decision. So instead of a flat "which one is better," let's look at what you gain and what you give up by moving to Linux — and what Mint and Ubuntu each bring to the table.
It's free. No license fee, no upgrade fee, and no fee for any upgrade that follows. Mint and Ubuntu download straight from the official sites, and updates stay free for the lifetime of the system. Windows and macOS cost money — directly, or quietly baked into the price of the hardware.
Freedom and transparency. The source code is open. Anyone can read it, audit it, and modify it. There are no hidden features and no silent data collection. Mint goes as far as collecting no telemetry at all by default. Contrast that with Windows, where ads in the start menu and background telemetry have been the norm for years.
Security. Linux is more resilient by design — a strict separation of user privileges, far less interest from malware authors, and updates that don't force a restart in the middle of your work. It's not invulnerable, but in practice, Linux users sleep easier.
It runs on old iron. Mint's 2 GB RAM minimum is practically a second lease on life for an aging laptop. Windows 11 demands a TPM 2.0 chip and a modern processor, ruthlessly cutting off older machines.
Software compatibility. If your workflow depends on Adobe Photoshop, AutoCAD, or a specific accounting package that only exists for Windows, you'll hit friction. There are alternatives — GIMP, LibreOffice, DaVinci Resolve — but they're usually close rather than equal. Before you jump, check whether the software you can't live without has a Linux version.
Gaming. This is changing fast. Thanks to Steam and the Proton compatibility layer, a huge library of games runs on Linux without issue, and the Steam Deck proved it at scale. But some titles with anti-cheat systems still refuse to work under Linux — and if those are your games, I can't cheer you up.
A learning curve. Give yourself a few days to settle in. Some apps install differently, and the terminal is sometimes unavoidable. If you're willing to learn, you'll manage. If not, Mint's familiar interface is the gentlest possible starting point.
Drivers. For about 95% of hardware, everything works out of the box. New or exotic components — especially cutting-edge graphics cards and Wi-Fi chips — sometimes need a bit of manual configuration.
Against Windows, Mint's big advantage is a familiar interface — start menu, taskbar, desktop icons. You swap Windows 10 for Mint and within a day you've forgotten you switched at all. Against macOS, Ubuntu offers a sleek, modern desktop and the broadest software ecosystem — developers test their applications on Ubuntu first.
When your entire workflow is built on software with no Linux version and no real alternative. When you play anti-cheat games that refuse to cooperate. When you simply don't have the time to learn a new system. Everything else — the budget, the desire for control over your own machine, the joy of reviving old hardware — points to giving it a try. At the very least, do a live boot from a USB stick. It changes nothing on your disk, and it might change your mind.
