When your laptop starts humming like a vacuum cleaner, the bottom gets hot even while you're watching videos, and games that used to run smoothly suddenly stutter, the first suspect is usually software. But more often than not, the culprit is physical: a layer of dust blocking the vents and thermal paste that dried out long ago. Unlike software issues, this is fixable in a few hours, with a handful of tools and some patience. Below I'll walk you through a real preventive maintenance job — from the first removed screw to the final load test.

Signs Your Laptop Needs Maintenance

Dust builds up silently, but its symptoms become louder over time:

  • the fan runs at high speed even on an idle desktop;
  • the air from the vents is hot and weak, and the area above the keyboard gets uncomfortably warm;
  • apps and games that used to run smoothly start to stutter because the CPU drops its clock speed to protect itself from overheating;
  • the laptop restarts on its own under load;
  • you can see a thick clump of dust through the grilles;
  • you haven't opened the machine in three or more years.

Each of these alone is a good enough reason. Together, they almost always mean the same thing — the cooling simply can't keep up anymore.

Why does it matter so much? A laptop's cooling system takes heat away from the CPU and GPU through heat pipes to a radiator with thin aluminum fins, and a fan pushes air across them. When the fins clog, the heat has nowhere to go, the CPU reduces its clock speed to avoid overheating, and the machine becomes slow and loud. This is the most common reason laptops "age" before their time.

What You Need Before You Start

A good result starts with the right tools. Nothing exotic is required, but don't skimp on the materials that come into direct contact with the chip.

  • screwdriver set — most often Philips #0 and #1, plus Torx or hex for many models;
  • plastic spudgers and pry tools for unclipping the case;
  • a soft, dense brush, preferably antistatic;
  • compressed air, or a compressor with a pressure regulator;
  • isopropyl alcohol of at least 90% and a lint-free cloth;
  • good-quality thermal paste — not the cheapest one on the shelf;
  • thermal pads of the right thickness;
  • a small tray or paper with compartments for the screws, tweezers and a flashlight;
  • patience — the most important tool on the list.

If you're going to swap parts or work in a carpeted room, ground yourself and discharge the static from your body first — the easiest way is an antistatic wrist strap or by regularly touching bare metal.

Disassembly and First Inspection

Power the laptop off, unplug it and, if the battery is external, remove it. On models with a built-in battery, unplug the connector from the motherboard after you remove the back panel — there should be no power at all while you work inside. Work on a clean, non-conductive surface, without a carpet under your feet.

Remove the screws in groups: first only the ones on the bottom cover, then only the ones on the cooling system. Take photos with your phone before every step — a photo saves more headaches than you'd think. Some screws differ in length, and a lost or stripped screw at the end of the job is a real nightmare.

Once the cover is off, look at everything first: signs of a swollen battery, bulged capacitors, dust and moisture. If you spot anything suspicious, stop and think whether a cleanup will do the job, or whether there's a deeper problem.

Cleaning Dust: The Right Technique

The cleaning itself is simple, but there are two mistakes people make all the time.

The first is blowing the fan while it spins. When compressed air makes the fan over-rotate, the bearing runs without power and can burn out in seconds. So always hold the blades still with a finger or the brush while blowing. The second is scattering the dust over the motherboard — blow outward and use the compressed air in short bursts, not one long stream.

The practical order goes like this: first knock the coarse dust off the grilles and radiator with the brush, then use compressed air, and finally go over the fins once more with the brush. If the dust is too heavy and caked, remove the fan from the radiator and clean them separately. Don't use a vacuum cleaner directly on the board — suction charges the components with static and isn't worth the risk.

Meanwhile, it's a good moment to check a few things unrelated to dust: whether the RAM and the NVMe drive are seated properly (remove and reseat them if you know what you're doing), and whether the battery, keyboard and touchpad connectors are in place.

Replacing Thermal Paste: Step by Step

Thermal paste is the weak link in cooling. After two or three years it dries out, crumbles, and an air gap forms between the chip and the radiator — one that insulates instead of conducting. Replacing it is the heart of the whole job.

Remove the entire cooling system — it's usually a single unit of radiator, heat pipes and fan, held by four to eight screws. Note the sequence and loosen them in a crisscross pattern, a little at a time, so the radiator doesn't tip to one side and deform the chip.

Then remove the old paste. With a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol, keep cleaning until the surface of the CPU and the radiator shine with no residue left. This is the most commonly skipped step — new paste spread over old one gives half the result. Let the surfaces dry completely before applying the new paste.

When it comes to the new paste, people either save too much or overdo it. Place a drop the size of a rice grain in the center of the CPU and let the radiator's pressure spread it. Don't smear it with your finger — skin oils hurt heat transfer. If you're using a special laptop paste that's meant to be spread in a thin layer, follow the manufacturer's instructions precisely.

The rule is simple: too little paste is better than too much. Excess paste doesn't improve cooling — it just squeezes out around the chip, and with some electrically conductive brands it can cause a short circuit.

Replacing Thermal Pads

Thermal pads are the silicone pads that transfer heat where surfaces don't sit flush against each other — most often on the voltage regulators, the chipset and the video memory. Paste can't replace them, because it gets squeezed out under pressure and the contact is lost.

Before fitting new ones, inspect the old ones. A fresh pad is soft and slightly moist. A dried one is hard, crumbly or leaves greasy marks on the components. If it's dried out, it has to go.

Thickness is the key. Thermal pads come in sizes from 0.5 to 2 mm and must fill the exact gap — a pad that's too thick doesn't sit well and pushes everything up, while one that's too thin doesn't touch the component at all. Measure the old pad before you throw it away, or use the manufacturer's chart for the specific model. Cut the new one to size with scissors and place it on a clean, dry surface.

Reassembly and Testing

Reassemble everything in reverse order and tighten the cooling system's screws in a crisscross pattern, evenly, without excessive zeal — a cracked radiator fin is the most annoying way to ruin your day. Before closing the cover, take a photo to make sure everything is in place.

The first test is powering on. Check in the BIOS or with a program like HWiNFO whether temperatures are normal and the fan is spinning. Then run real load for 15–30 minutes — a game, rendering or a stress test like AIDA64. Watch the CPU temperature: the difference before and after the job is often 15 to 30 degrees under load. Noise is an indicator too — at idle the fan should be almost inaudible.

How Often Should You Do It

There's no universal formula, but a good rule of thumb is once every 12–18 months. In a dusty home, with pets or smokers around — more often. Gaming laptops that run at full tilt all day also need more frequent attention. If you work in a clean office, you can comfortably stretch the interval to two years.

DIY or a Service?

Preventive maintenance is one of the few jobs you can do yourself with moderate technical skills. But before you dive in, think about three things. If the laptop is under warranty, opening it voids it. If the model has a glued, sealed construction, the risk of breaking it while opening it is real. And if you're not confident in the steps, the cost of a single mistake — a broken connector, a torn cable or an overheated chip — far exceeds the price of professional service.
